India: As of August 1st, sugarcane planting area has reached 5.731 million hectares

The Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers´ Welfare (DA&FW) has released progress on the coverage of bumper crop areas as of August 1, 2025.
Sugarcane is an important economic crop in the country, with a planting area of approximately 5.731 million hectares as of August 1st. According to DA&FW data, this marks an increase of approximately 164000 hectares in sowing area compared to the same period last year, when the sowing area was 5.568 million hectares.
The sugar industry has expressed an optimistic outlook for the upcoming 2025-26 sugar season. At the conference held by ISMA on July 31, 2025, attended by representatives from sugar producing states across the country, India´s total sugar production (before shifting to ethanol) is expected to increase by 18% to approximately 34.9 million tons, compared to 29.5 million tons in 2024-25.
Supported by favorable weather conditions, sugarcane cultivation in major production areas such as Maharashtra and Karnataka has improved, laying the foundation for the scheduled start of the sugarcane crushing season in October 2025.
